Draft 5

One of the greatest challenges Narayanan and Kumari had to overcome was moving from india to the Sri lanka. The British forced them to leave their family.Narayanan and Kumari were friends for a long time since the time they were brought to Sri Lanka from india to work in tea plantations.Sri Lanka was a British colony and the Tamils were slaves to them. They were forced by the British to work everyday without fail with only little time to rest too.Narayanan and Kumari were tired of this and tried to stop work but when they saw how a fellow friend got tortured for not doing his work they changed their mind.

Many years passed and Ceylon finally gained independence.Narayanan and kumari were overjoyed with excitement;they were finally released from the torture that they had to suffer. But the worst has yet to come.Since Sri Lanka was mostly made out of Sinhalese people, the government was made out of them too. This caused them to be overly annoyed. The government was not a good one and this caused many tempers to flare between the races in Sri Lanka. There were many things they did.Firstly they only gave citizenship to Sinhalese people and a minority to other races so this caused many people to be countryless.Secondly they were extremely unfair and always gave the Sinhalese priority. This made the Tamils very angry and annoyed. But Narayanan and Kumari were the minority who were lucky to get their citizenship.

Narayanan and kumari lived together for 2 years and finally decided to get married. After a few months there was a new policy made by the government and the policy was called the resettlement policy. This policy meant that all the Tamils in Ceylon were to move to higher grounds where the tea plantations were, away from the Sinhalese.Narayanan and Kumari did not mind because they were already living there.Narayanan and Kumari were tired of working in tea plantations and went to get a job in the city and since they knew English they did not have to wait long. They got a job as a sales promoter and they were happy with it.Once when they were working at noon they saw Tamil protesters walking past outside the store and they told themselves that they were never going to stoop to such a low level no matter how they suffered.

Years passed quickly without any hardship.Narayanan and Kumari were happy parents with two beautiful twin sons. Both of them tried to work overtime everyday because they wanted to save early for their children school fees because they had to start now as their pay was too low.Their dreams were smashed when the government wanted to change their official language to Sinhala. They did not know sinhala and this caused them to lose their job.But they gave three years grace for a person to learn sinhala.Since they did not have a choice they decided to learn it and they made their children learn it too as schools taught students in sinhala too. They were angry with the government but not to the extent to protest against them.

The final straw came after 16 long years. The government wanted to change the criteria for the university admissions and their blood started to boil as their sons were just a few months away to enter university. The criteria said that the Sinhalese were given priority to enter universities even if they got lower marks than a Tamil person. Both of them were fuming mad and they were not the only people all the Tamils were angry with them and all of them started to protest. As usual only a minimum number of students were able to enter and their sons were not the ones. This made them very angry and caused them to hate the Sinhalese.

They lived with anger for 4 years and the Tamils finally came to a decision to create a civil war with the Sinhalese. They created a group called the Tamil United Liberation Front and the war started.Since their children did not finish their studies and they they were enraged with anger they decided to let their children join the group and this caused a happy family to turn into freedom fighters. Is this the end of all the happy family's in Sri Lanka? Or is this the beginning of a new war?
